1997 Southwest Thing
The Second Annual Southwest Thing, sponsored by the New Mexico Asatru Council and
Margvegr Kindred, was held May 23-26 at Golden Gate Canyon State Park in Colorado,
on the southern slope of Mount Thorodin. The Thing was well attended despite the
frequent thunderstorms.
Viking Games, hosted by Horsetooth Hearth, included sparring matches, and axe throwing.
Winners of the axe throw (a tie) are shown on the right.
in addition to a rite of rememberance and various sumbels, (not shown) a coming of
age ritual (shown above) was held for ErikR Wodansson at the Thing.
Workshops on the Healing Goddesses of Lyfjaberg by Laeknir Eirarson, the Role of
Wholemaker in the Community by Bil Linzie (left), and a presentation on Frigga's Web's
Ancestors' Hall were held. Margvegr kindred hosted an oracular seidh and a skaldic
circle. Laeknir Eirarson held an Eir Blot (center). The brewing competition had
categories for best ale, mead, and label (right). The annual meeting of the New Mexico
Asatru Council was held in addition to a discussion on the potential for a
Southwestern Asatru Council.
